Opel denies report GM plans 5,300 German job cuts
RUESSELSHEIM, Germany, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Opel denied a report that its parent General Motors [GM.UL] plans to cut 5,300 jobs at the European carmaker's plants in Germany, saying that figure was much too high.
German news agency dpa earlier on Wednesday cited company sources as saying that GM planned to cut 8,700 jobs in Europe, more than 80 percent of which were in Germany and Belgium.
In Germany, 5,300 jobs would go, most of which at Opel's Ruesselsheim headquarters and in Bochum, dpa said.
Opel said GM Europe head Nick Reilly would discuss plans for Opel with worker representatives later on Wednesday. Reilly and works council head Klaus Franz would make statements on the matter following the meeting.
